St. Nicholas (Croatian) Roman Catholic Church was in danger: PennDOT was widening Route 28 on the North Side and the entire area between 31st Street Bridge and the road to Troy Hill was to be destroyed, including the church. Preservation Pittsburgh and a group of congregants from the church called Preserve Croatian Heritage Foundation successfully lobbied to have the church designated historic by the City of Pittsburgh. The future of this lovely edifice, the grotto and the grounds, is still unknown. PennDOT recently released alternatives that will save the church and we applaud their sensitivity to our urban sacred landmarks.
