Original spelling of the city: "Pittsbourgh"

Original pronunciation: probably "Pitts-boro" since burgh and bourgh are
variations of the word "borough"

1769 - General John Forbes renames Fort DuQuesne to be "Pittsbourgh" in
honor of William Pitt

1769 - Survey conducted of the "Manor of Pittsburgh"

1784 - Thos. Vicroy of Bedford County lays out the "Manor of Pittsburgh"

1816 - Pittsburgh spelled with an "H" in an act incorporating the city; however, the printer dropped the "H" when printing this act in one of the law books.

1890 - United States Board on Geographic Names Policy publishes a series of rules aimed at standardizing city and town names, including dropping the "H" on places that end in "burgh."

1911 - After concerned citizens lobbied for the historic spelling with the "H," the U.S. Board on Geographic Names Policy reverses its previous decision and    makes "Pittsburgh" the official spelling.
